excellenta pocket book that has almost all you need to know. it's concise, giving you just the information you need. Updated from the latest reviews published in journals. If you are not satisfied with the information given in the book, or you think it's not enough, you can still read A TEXTBOOK OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES. remember this book (the same as all pocket books) is best to be used during rounds, or to have a quick reference of a certain subject. You won't be dissapointed.

Marcus Aurelius: A Biography
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (May, 1987)
Average review score:

A history book that reads like a novelThis book about the emperor-philosopher who ruled the Roman empire in the late second century AD is pure joy. Written by Anthohy Birley, a professor of Ancient History, the book is a learned and comprehensive account of Aurelius' life and times. Marcus Aurelius was a fascinating figure - not only was he a mighty emperor, spending long years in the battle field and dealing with a horrible plague ravaging throughout the Roman Empire but he was also a philosopher who recorded his stoic reflections of commitment to virtue above pleasure in his "meditations". Birley manages in his book to bring this extraordinary man of 1800 years ago to life for today's reader, and I would recommend this book not only to scholars, studying Roman history, but also to anyone who likes quality reading - this is a well written history book that reads like a very good novel!

Marihuana, Motherhood & Madness
Published in Hardcover by Scarecrow Press (19 February, 1998)

if you searched for this, you know you want it...Here are three of Dwain and Hildegarde Esper's most infamous exploitation scripts of the 1930s. Not exactly camp, Esper's films are wild, no-holds-barred sleeze that go for the jugular. If you've had the privelege of seeing the truly uncanny Maniac, you'll probably know just what editor Bret Wood is talking about as he describes the queasiness with which we watch a scene of an amateur cat skinner, knowing that there's no way a film of this budget could have afforded to FAKE such props...Esper's films were not only creepy side-shows--there's an artistry at work here, too. Besides the scripts, Wood has contributed excellent essays and notes on the films, with tantalizing biographical information on, I think it's safe to say, the most bizarre husband and wife team in the movies. I can't wait for an exhaustive biography on the Espers, but in the meantime this is a fascinating appetizer.

Marion Fay
Published in Paperback by University of Michigan Press (June, 1990)
Average review score:

One of Trollope's best love storiesIt's quite strange that this book, of all Trollope, is so hard to find. Reviewers didn't like it when it was originally published in the late 1800s, and it never shook its reputation as ultra-tedious. This mystifies me. The melodrama between politically radical Lord Jack Hampton and Marion Fay, a non-aristocratic young Quaker woman who's more of a lady than several of the "ladies" in the book, is flirtatious, accessible and fun (Hampton repeatedly teases Marion that he fell for her when she "poked his fire," i.e. tended his fireplace with a poker--a bolder play with innuendo than Trollope usually engages in). It then turns passionate when Marion won't marry Jack because of a secret trouble involving life-threatening illness. T. uses the situation to examine with great depth and sensitivity the desire to consummate the spiritual union of two souls via marriage. This is the most careful look at what marriage means in T.'s ideal world that I have read in his work yet. He makes it exciting and suspenseful, since we're waiting to see if Marion will really get to poke Jack's fire--or if an unthinkable separation will occur. As in all T., there is a hilarious cast of characters who toe the line that separates the comically pathetic from the dangerously antisocial--for example, will Jack's archetypical evil stepmom just grumble her way through life, or will she scheme to kill Jack? The multiple marriage and family plots are very well integrated, unlike in some other T. novels.
